PRESENTATION

Situated in the leafy suburb of Gardens, right behind the Mount Nelson hotel and painted in the same famous pink colour, the Lady Hamilton was named after Lord Nelson’s beautiful mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton.

Gardens is located right above the city centre and is one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs. The Lady Hamilton, built in the early 1950’s, has a distinct colonial feel and is surrounded by historical buildings. It is within walking distance of vibrant Kloof Street with its trendy and quaint shops, deli’s, top restaurants and coffee shops.
Table Mountain towers above Gardens and the cable car is a short drive away. The city centre by way of the Company Gardens and the historic Parliament is a brisk 15 minute walk away.
The gracious Lady Hamilton Hotel welcomes you with the smell of freshly brewed coffee as you step into the spacious reception and adjacent cosy lounge area. Friendly reception staff speak several languages and can assist with tours and bookings as well as with car hire.

MORE ABOUT LADY EMMA HAMILTON

Born Amy Lyon in Cheshire in 1761, she was the daughter of a blacksmith who died when she was two months old, leaving Amy to be brought up by her mother Mary Kidd. She later changed her name to Emma Hart.
By the age of 21 Emma had already acquired a dubious reputation as the mistress of several men. Her beauty was legendary and many men of noble birth fell for her charms, among them the elderly Sir William Hamilton, British Envoy to Naples who married her in 1791.
While still married to Hamilton Emma met the dashing and charismatic Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and they embarked on a passionate affair. At the age of 40 Emma gave birth to Nelson's daughter Horatia.

After Nelson's death in the famous Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Emma fell deeply into debt. She spent a year in debtor's prison before moving to France to try to escape her creditors. She died in Calais in January 1815 aged 54.
